Last week, Kohler opened the doors to their inaugural Kohler Experience Centre in New York’s Flatiron district. Designers lined up to attend the unveiling – the first of a series of new Kohler Experience Centres to open this year.
Designers line up outside the new Kohler Experience Centre in New York.
Occupying a 10,000 foot space, the global flagship is divided into a series of kitchen and bathroom vignettes, interactive displays allowing visitors to use and experience products, a private bathing space AND an art installation, demonstrating Kohler’s commitment to the arts and curated by Kohler’s John Michael Kohler Arts Centre.
More like an expansive home than a showroom, president and CEO David Kohler explained “The concept was created with both customer segments in mind to eliminate the chaos of choice and simplify what can otherwise be, at times, a challenging process.”
Interspersed with these product focused vignettes are cleverly presented displays of Kohler’s extensive bathroom product range where visitors can immerse themselves in the decision making experience; a tapware wheel – matching fixtures, finishes and colours; private showering spaces – where you can book your own appointment in the spa-like retreat to trial the showers and baths first-hand, the perfect ‘try before you buy’ bathroom.
One of the spa retreat bathrooms you can book and experience before you buy!
experience! And collections of complementary basins and products – side by side to provide plenty of bathroom design inspiration.
The colour wheel at KEC
As a global leading bathroom brand working closely with architects and designers internationally, the showroom also displays fixtures and fittings compliant with international standards, plus an on-site international bathing expert is on hand who can advise on plumbing regulations in different countries. The inclusion of video-conferencing technology to communicate with local Kohler associates around the globe ensures this is a truly international showroom.
“For the first time ever, design professionals will have hands-on access to Kohler’s global product suite,” David Kohler explained. “The beauty of this is twofold: We’re streamlining the specification process for design professionals working on projects around the world and also creating a design test lab where we can gather invaluable intel on which products from our global offering resonate in different markets, helping us stay at the forefront of design trends.”
The art exhibition includes select pieces from the John Michael KOhler Arts Centre in Kohler, Wisconsin, featuring elements from Babel by Alabama artist Jim Neel. Babel was created during Neel’s 2008 Arts/Industry residency at the Kohler Co. Pottery.
The Art installation at KEC NYC
New York is the first of nine KEC locations due to open this year in major cities including Bangkok, Hong Kong, New Delhi, London, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Singapore, and Taipei.
According to UNICEF, in 2015, 1.8 billion people were using unsafe drinking water.
What the world needs is a solution to improve the water quality and consequently the lives that are affected by it. Kohler Associates worked together to figure out how to help build better lives and how to reduce the struggle to find clean water. The project resulted in the development of a ceramic water filtration system called Kohler Clarity.
Designed by a Kohler team in the UK, engineered by a Kohler team in India and produced in a Kohler factory in the US, this truly trans-global project created a water filter that meets exceptionally high standards of quality and design. The filtration system, for example, is highly effective yet incredibly simple to use and maintain.
Kohler Clarity is an innovative ceramic water filtration system designed to offer 40 litres of safe water per day without using electricity. Each Kohler Clarity filters out more than 99% of bacteria and protozoa, providing up to 40 litres of safe water each day – enough clean drinking water for a family of four. Given the incidence of water-borne illnesses can be reduced by 45 per cent through safe drinking water – and safe storage – the Kohler Clarity is a life-changing development.
Kohler Clarity Filter Cartridge
The design of the Kohler Clarity meets World Health Organisation water quality standards. The appliance filters up to two litres of water an hour and has a total capacity of 23 litres – 11 litres of dirty water and 12 litres of clean water with safe storage.
Each filter can clean up to 5000 litres of water – and replacement filters are very low cost and readily available.
Even the packaging has been designed to fit more product into a standard box and therefore significantly reduce transport costs.
The Kohler Clarity has already helped countless numbers of people in developing countries.

Bathroom basins have a new look and a longer life! The latest ceramics technology has created a super-ceramic whereby vitreous china can be shaped into beautifully refined, slim-walled basins that are more durable and stain-free.
The stunning new Mica Slim Rim Basin
Kohler, one of the world’s largest bathroom specialists, has developed the Mica basin – a countertop vessel basin with super slim walls, just 6mm thick, and a CleanCoat™ stain-resistant coating.
The Mica basins are minimalist in design and perfectly proportioned. Designed to be used with statement hob-mounted taps such as Kohler’s award-winning Composed the Mica, in its modernist form, is the perfect complement to any style of bathroom or ensuite.
The delicate appearance of the walls of the Mica are, in fact, misleading. While extremely delicate and elegant in appearance, these new basins are 1.5 times harder than traditional vitreous china.
The 6mm super-ceramic slim rim is extremely strong and durable.
And Kohler’s DFI CleanCoat™ finish creates an invisible stain-resistant surface that ensures the basin retains its original glossy, pristine good looks after many years of use.
The Mica vessel basin comes in two designs – 393 mm square and a 410 mm diameter round version.
The ‘unveiling’ of Kohler’s Veil smart toilet takes hygiene and comfort to a new level in terms of luxury and personalised convenience.
The Veil is a self-cleaning wall hung toilet with advanced bidet features controlled by a one-touch remote control. The design of the Veil deserves special mention as its balanced curves and sculpted form inject a sense of beauty into the utilitarian toilet or bathroom space.
The Veil Intelligent Toilet – integrating technology and hygiene.
The French curve heated seat, with its gently dished shape, minimises pressure points for extra comfort while its antibacterial material enhances hygiene levels. The ultra-responsive remote control offers a suite of customised features to optimise hygiene and personal comfort – these include a choice of soft, pulsating or spiral wash with instant air-infused warm water; choice of water temperature; warm air dryer with adjustable temperature control; and seat temperature adjustment.
The French curve seat is ergonomically designed to eliminate seat pressure points and enhance seat comfort. With the addition of antibacterial properties for optimum hygiene.
The Veil’s stainless steel spray wand automatically cleans itself with sterilised water after each use – and automatically sanitises itself with UV light every 24 hours.
The bidet wand has three wash functions and heats the water to your desired temperature.
The powerful, twin jet flushing system of Veil, together with its rimless bowl, ensures a cleaner flush and an all round higher standard of hygiene within the toilet.
Multiple flushing options offer improved hygiene, including automatic flush; touchless flush, one touch flush and manual flush.
Further testament to the rich list of features are the automatic seat cover – sensor-activated with three adjustable distance settings to automatically open and close the lid – and the blue LED nightlight on the face plate of the toilet.
The Veil has half and full flush options with a 4 star WELS rating and 3.3 litre average flush.
The Veil Intelligent Toilet offers the perfect balance of form and function to encapsulate the essence of the modern intelligent toilet.

Following the Design Forum earlier this year, we met up with Bill Bensley in the gardens of his recently completed OUE Twin Peaks projects, to talk about trends and his design philosophy as part of our Kohler Global Design Trends series.
Bill Bensley at the OUE Twin Peaks property in Singapore
Bill has designed resorts and landscapes all over the world and his credo is minimal impact and sustainability – first and foremost Therefore one of this first considerations before starting a project is “How can I protect the environment?”
Bill Bensley incorporates sculptures into his landscaping designs as part of the “storyline”.
Bill believes that everything must go back to the DNA and all elements should have a clear storyline, flowing like a good Hollywood movie.
About Bill Bensley
Bill Bensley is a Harvard-educated architect and landscape designer based in Bangkok, known as the king of exotic luxury resorts. His properties number more than 100 across 26 countries and include properties such as Four Seasons Hualalai, The Four Seasons Chiang Mai and Tented Camp in Chiang Rai, Intercontinental Danang and many more.
In a rare milestone in the history of the toilet, new engineering and design has produced a maximum hygiene/minimal-cleaning model that delivers real benefits and understated aesthetics.
The new Grande Rimless Back to Wall Suite
Kohler’s new Grande Rimless Back to Wall Toilet Suite features a seamless smooth pan which has been produced through a custom process to deliver an industry leading straight skirted toilet with a flawless finish.
The Grande also features a rimless bowl with a smooth interior and ultra-efficient flush system – improvements that produce the most germ free, hygienic toilet ever and one that is far easier to clean!
The rim of traditional toilet bowls – originally designed to optimise the distribution of water needed to rinse the toilet interior – actually creates a safe haven for germs and bacteria and makes adequate cleaning quite tricky.
Sleek, clean styling of the Grande Back To Wall Toilet Suite
The new rimless Grande, by Kohler, has no rim – just a very smooth interior that is rigorously cleaned by the toilet’s ultra-efficient flush system. Basically the flush propels the water, very powerfully, around the bowl but clever engineering and shaping ensures no splashback.
The compact, understated design of the Grande Back To Wall toilet suite means it will perform equally well in master bathrooms and ensuites and complement any interior design aesthetic. It projects just 650mm from the wall and is a mere 395mm wide.
Additional features include Quiet Close VQR (Vertical Quick Release) toilet seat – really easy removal for enhanced cleaning – and 4 star WELS rating (average flush of just 3.5 litres). It is suitable for both new builds as well as retrofit as it has back and side entry for water feed.
