Celebrating its 145th year of producing some of the world’s most fashion-forward bathroom fixtures, Kohler presented a celebration of modernism at this year’s Salone del Mobile (Milan Design Fair).
Transforming Milan’s famed Museo Bagatti Valsecchi, Kohler treated its audience to an experience that was both visually enticing and emotionally evocative.
Guests were taken on a journey through the entire spectrum of modernism – from minimalism to maximalism – via the lens of a series of artistic installations constructed from Kohler’s world wide products portfolio.
The ornate décor of the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi served as the perfect backdrop to a series of installations set in the grand rooms of the historic museum.
One of the highlights was the newly released ‘Dutchmaster’ sinks collection featuring bold embellishment in the form of large scale botanical patterns in a rich, dark, moody colour palette.
As a direct contrast the smart, sharp ‘Components’ tapware collection drew much attention. Exuding a strong, raw industrial aesthetic the taps feature a clean matte black finish. Other drawcards in the modernist oeuvre were the newly released Ombré finish and the DeStijl-inspired Kallista Grid tap. The latter is a feat of design and engineering, featuring a dramatic geometric silhouette created with cutting-edge 3D-printing technology.
A further element of Kohler’s visual feast was the very creative use of lighting to add a new and exciting dimension to a number of products. Its new Lighting Suite, for example, created for the organic Veil collection, magnified and enhanced the products – which included mirror, basin, vanity, bath and wall-hung vanity. Each piece was framed by an ambient glow that can change shade according to the user’s mood.
Curator of the exhibition, Mark Bickerstaffe, Kohler’s Director of New Product Development, Kitchen and Bath, said the installations demonstrated Kohler’s love and commitment to comprehensive and forward-thinking design. “From minimalism to maximalism, we love creativity in all its forms; and that has never been more apparent than with our new products”, said Bickerstaffe.
If there is one key trend for bathrooms in 2018 it would be CHOICE. While one person opts for sleek and white, another will crush on personality and patina. Global suppliers such as Kohler have seen the signs and are extending their ranges to ensure we can all stamp our style and character on our interiors.
Just as Kohler was one of the forerunners in creating precious metal finishes to its tapware – rose gold, titanium and brushed nickel for example – it has also taken the lead in developing a choice of trims for bath and shower mixers.
With its introduction of new Slim Trims consumers can now choose between the traditional sized mixers to match their favourite tap and slimmer, sleeker versions. They also have the option of a shower mixer plate with or without diverter.
The new Cuff Slim Shower Trim – with and without diverter
The Slim Trims have been designed to match some of Kohler’s best- selling polished chrome tapware ranges – Purist, Loure, Aleo, Strayt, Toobi, Kumin and Cuff.
Aleo Slim Shower Trim – without diverter
Strayt Slim Shower Mixer – without diverter
In most cases the width of the mixer plate, without diverter, has been reduced by at least 25 per cent – and in the case of the Purist and Cuff mixers these are now a neat 100mm diameter circle.
Purist Slim Shower Trim
The aesthetic advantage of the Slim Trims is that the peripheral hardware no longer dominates – which allows the true heroes, such as the showerhead and surface finishes, to shine!

Launched to great acclaim and garnering international accolades, Kohler’s ModernLife toilet suite has been recognised for its revolutionary approach to hygiene and ease of cleaning with the prestigious international Red Dot Design Award.
The key feature of the ModernLife back to wall toilet is its truly rimless bowl – a first in the New Zealand market. In taking rimless technology to the next level, Kohler has introduced a beautifully engineered pan featuring a bevelled and chamfered edge. This bevelled edge is finished with Kohler’s patented CleanCoat™ technology.
The ground-breaking combination of the rim’s inward-sloping design and the finish of the edge means any liquid hitting this area will form small beads of liquid that will roll easily into the toilet bowl. In addition, the Vertical Quick Release seat means the seat can be removed with just a gentle pull (when vertical) making thorough cleaning both fast and easy.
It is these innovative features that create the new level of hygiene and easy cleaning that Kohler is introducing with the ModernLife collection. The smooth, sleek interior also means there are no ridges or channels in which germs or dirt can hide. And its 360˚ dynamic flush flow ensures the bowl is rinsed thoroughly.
In another first, Kohler has included an optional Elite Seat. This introduces new levels of comfort and convenience in the form of a subtle LED pinstripe light – to subtly light the seating area when dark, without creating too much light – and a fragrance sachet to gently perfume the air. Both are operated by two AAA, easily replaceable batteries. The ultra-streamlined Elite Seat has an easy fit invisible hinge (easy to install and quick to release for thorough cleaning) plus quiet close seat and lid.
The timeless form of ModernLife’s design is the essence of simplicity with the slight overhang of the lid creating a seamless look.
The ModernLife Back to Wall Toilet suite also features optimal water-saving technology with a mere 4.5/3L water consumption (4 star WELS rating).
The ModernLife toilet suite – with the option of the Elite Seat – is complemented by the ModernLife vessel basins (with and without tap hole) that emulate the simplicity of form and sleek profile of the toilet.
Not often is a new, high tech bathroom appliance specifically designed to save the homeowner money while at the same time delivering the very best in water saving showering technology! Kohler has done just that with its HydroRail shower columns.
The Torsion HydroRail converts easily from a fixed shower head to a multi-function showering experience.
A luxurious home-spa showering experience, Kohler’s HydroRail is designed to replace a wall-mounted fixed-head shower. It can be installed in an existing shower space without the expense or inconvenience of having to go ‘behind the wall’ and change current plumbing.
Convert your fixed head shower.
Originally developed for the Westin Hotel group – to help them meet their global commitment to reduce their water usage by 20 per cent by 2020 – the HydroRail, designed to deliver an overhead tropical rainshower experience, envelopes the user in a deluge of large, full drops. In addition the user can take advantage of adding a handshower – the Awaken multifunction handshower – for hair washing or a more targeted massaging water spray.
The HydroRail comprises either an arched or square shower column (designed to give maximum height to the showerhead) with a 200mm RainCan showerhead with Katalyst technology; an Awaken multi-function hand shower; a diverter (to switch between overhead and hand shower); and a stainless steel shower hose.
The HydroRail Round Showering Column with Katalyst showerhead and multifunction handshower.
Katalyst technology injects 2.2 litres of air into every 9.4 litres of water to create larger, fuller water droplets that retain heat longer – all the time using only 9 litres of water a minute (3 star WELS rating).
The HydroRail Square Shower Column with Katalyst showerhead and multifunction handshower.
The HydroRail Shower Column is available with a round or square 200mm RainCan showerhead and features the Awaken hand shower with a 110mm diameter sculpted spray face and three different spray patterns accessed by a simple slide tab on the showerhead.
Another option is the Kohler Hydrorail Slide Shower featuring the Awaken showerhead with slide rail and bracket. This again is designed to be retrofitted without the need to go ‘behind the wall’ with the slide rail enabling the user to adjust the showerhead to the exact height required or use it as a handshower for rinsing hair or even the walls of the shower space!
The HydroRail slide shower converts easily from a fixed showerhead.
The breakthrough HydroRail from Kohler brings a cost-effective showering upgrade within reach of us all. Trade an outdated fixed wall-mount showerhead for a luxury spa experience using existing plumbing with the Kohler HydroRail shower column or slide shower.
